Rear gear?? driveshaft revolutions??

I heard you can tell what gear you have by how many times driveshaft goes around to one revolution on tire????

If that is the case can someone tell me what gear I have. Shaft went around a tad over 3 revolutions.

Thanks

3.08 for the win.

Just for good measure i like to tie something around the shaft and mark where dead bottom is on the shaft to make it easier to count revolutions. Some people even go as far as to tie a string and count how many times it wraps...whatever works best for ya.

Could be 3.27s too. I thought the rear end assembly I picked up was a 3.08. when I turned the axles once, it rotated a tad over 3 times. When I got it home and opened it up, it turned out to be a 3.27.

Best way to do it is rotate the wheels 10 times, and count the driveshaft revolutions, then divide that number by 10 -- 31 revolutions = 3.08, 33 revolutions = 3.27, etc.

Yes, the metal tag attached to one of the bolts does tell you. If its still there. It is an ID tag for whatever is factory with the rear. Most people will leave it there unless they do change gears. Thats why I say read it first then verify with the wheel / ds thing. In that row of numbers and letters it will say something like 8.8LS blah blah blah 2.73 or 3.08 or 3.27

OK i'll check again the tag is there, but the number/letter combo didnt make sense. I'll get them and post it here.

If you're the original owner and you know that the rear end has never been changed, it's a 3.08
I'm not the original owner. I've had it for a little over a year now. I bought the car with only 16,000 miles on it, everything that I could tell was stock. Still had silencer in place, Heck I still have the O.E. plugs and wires on it.
