Rear Main Seal/Oil pan gasket compatibility

My engine builder said I need a one piece rear main seal for my setup. He also advised on a multi-piece cork oil pan gasket. He said that they seal just as good as the high dollar ones if installed properly.

Now, I have a dilemma. I have found the rear main seal at summit. However, all of the oil pan gaskets I see are for two piece rear main seal setups? Does it really matter that much? If so, does anyone have a part number and a location to buy a multi-piece cork oil pan gasket for a one piece rear main seal?

I've always been a fan of the one piece rubber oil pan gaskets, they work on any block, regardless of the type of rear main seal. The multi-piece seem to always seep out an oily mist. Fitting all the pieces together just right, silicone dobs at the corners, etc., can be a pain. The rubber gaskets keep it high and dry and you don't have to be as meticulous during installation, just put it on and snug the bolts, the built in compression stops prevent over-tightening. I've installed several of them dry, no sealer whatsoever, and no leaks whatsoever. As for one pice rear main seals, you'd better have a block and main caps designed for it, 'cause otherwise it won't fit. 1 piece rear main blocks have to use a 1 pc seal, there is no interchangeability, thus no choice in which to use.

Also, I don't know where you're ordering from, but chain stores(Advance, Auto Zone) always have better prices on gaskets than Summit.

What kind of engine are you working on? I just did a 351W and I think the pan gasket p# was a FelPro OS30616R, if you need one for a 302, just have them look one up for a 93 5.0 mustang. They had 1 pc gaskets and 1 pc rear main seals.

The engine is a 92 5.0. I will go to autozone tonight and see what they can order for gaskets. Thanks

When I ordered my Canton pan, they recommended using a 4-Piece gasket. I've always used these in the past with no leakage.

The four corners where the pan turns down to go around the timing cover or the rear main cap are sharper on the four piece gasket pan than the one piece style pan. The core that we use has the stamping that is to be used with a four piece style gasket. These are the gaskets we sell.

BTW - I also use an oil pan stud kit. This makes alignment a breeze.

It sounds like it would be beneficial to use a 4 pc gasket pan with a 1 pc gasket if thats the case. The sharper corners would help secure the gasket in the corners, where it would be most likely to leak.

i am correct on the one piece rear main seal though, correct? My engine builder did say a one piece, but I cant remember if It old him it was a late model block or not.

if its a 92 5.0, should be 1 pc rear main, I'm thinking all the roller motors were 1 pc....

Not correct, you're confusing this info with the swap from a rope seal to a neoprene seal.

If your Autozone has to order them, then they need a new manager. Those two items are common everyday stock items. One other piece of advice ( 2 actually) concerning the 1 pc gasket, use the pan rail stiffeners too. also do NOT toss the plastic "studs" that come with the gasket. They come in mighty handy if you ever have to pull the pan while it's in the car, or by chance, have to install the pan while the motor's on an engine stand and you can't invert it for some reason ( I had to do this with the 331 stroker a couple months ago)
