Rear Main seal, which way?

Im putting in a rear main seal in my 89 5.0L its a once piece. I have fergotton which way the seal goes. Is it possible to put the seal in backwards?

I'm sure that's why mine is leaking...damn it too At least it's a garage queen and it's not that bad.

i have my engine out and noticed that mine appears to be just the opposite. Not doubting any1 knowledge just asking it to double checked. what is the correct way to install a rear main seal???

Flat side out, spring side in.

Jeez, this thread is old. I guess that means the search is working

Any seal, not just main seals, all go spring side in. Everytime.
