hey....after talking with my father today were going to put in my gears next sunday....i know that i've asked these questions before.....but all i'm going to install just the gears....is there something i need to know before i begin???? what tools will i need???
how many miles?? if you were going to rebuild a engine with high miles would you just re-ring it and call it good?? its opened up and its cheap to replace the rear ends...trac loc rebuilds are like 45 bucks.... then get a rear end mini kit it comes with your crush sleves and pinion seal and shims and what not....make sure you also get a bottle of friction modifier to add to the fresh gear lube...
You will need inch pound and foot pound torque wrenches a dial indicator with a manetic base, digital calipers would be helpful for measuring shims, a bearing seperator for removing the pinion bearing, red loctite, some black RTV for sealing the cover and if it were me I would change out the axle bearings, seals and rear brake pads why it is all tore down, I didn't and I had to go back and do it 2000 miles later also when you remove the rear calipers be sure to use C clamps to keep them compressed while you are doing the work or you will have to buy the tool to recompress them. A floor jack and jack stands are a must have also, a hand pump to put the gear oil sure helps alot too. Be patient and measure everything 3 times before putting it back together and you've got a good chance of it turning out okay.
