rear tire wear

Hi,
I have a 06 GT with a manual transmission. I have 48,000 miles on it. I need to replace the rear tires for the 2nd time. The original fronts still about 50% of life left. I do a few burn outs but not a lot. When the car had about 20,000 miles I had a odd whining/groaning noise from rear differential. It lasted about 2 months and stopped before I could get it to the dealership. Is this rear tire wear normal or do I have a different problem.
Thanks!

I just read a thread further down about the rear end moan. I typically read the forum on Stangnet for the older mustangs. I have 99 GT that I run on road courses, so I haven't been monitoring this group. My rear end moaned really bad for about 2 months and then stopped. I assume that means the clutch packs wore down and now aren't causing a problem. At least that's what I hope. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben

From what I am been told, I would say it is about normal with the exception of your front tires. It's unusual to have 48,000 miles on them and still have 50 percent left.
As for the rear tires, did you rotate them on a regular basis? That can extend life. But performance tires are soft and my local tire "experts" tell me that getting 24,000 to 30,000 miles out of a set is actually doing quite well.

I went out today and I probably only have 30% left on the fronts at 48,000 miles. I will probably just swap all four out this time. Any suggestions for replacements. I was just using the stock BFG G-Force TA, KDWS, 235/50ZR18's. What is the largest size I can go with in this tire? A little wider tire would be cool, especially in the rear.
Thanks,
Ben

HA Ha!

Actually, I'm the most aggressive driver of our group at the track. But I use my 99 GT for that. My 06 is my daily driver and I take care of it. Not that I don't do a burn out occasionally or smoke the occasional Camaro or older Stang. But I save most of that for the track. We go to track events at VIR at least twice a year, so I get my share of speed. I hit 124 on the back straight my last time there. (legally)

CBus 06 GT- Thanks, I think I will go with the 255/45's this time.
