I had rear gears installed about 5 years and 8,000 miles ago. About 3,000 miles after the install I remember hearing a grinding noise ONCE when I backed up. I waited for it to happen again, but it never did. Time went by (about 1,000 miles) and I noticed the rear began to get a whirling noise to it.

Now in present time the rearend has been howling something fierce. Every time I drive the car it gets louder. I figured it was a(the) carrier bearing(s). Well, I had Moser axles, an FRPP diff and 3.73 gears installed today along with all new bearings.

It turns out the driver's side carrier bearing is shot. The cone and rollers were majorly tore up. In the pics you can see the cone. It ONLY has marks on one side of the cone. About half of the cone is marred, the other side is fine.

What would cause something like this? Just a bad bearing or a bad install? I dont understand how a bad install would only eat away one half of the cone. I had my local Ford dealer do the install since I have no experience with rears. The new setup is so dead quiet that the car seems like a total new beast. I can actually hear the radio now

Ya Dude...Thats beat for sure....I would bet its just the way it wore out..Unless the carrier shims were put on backwards, swapped sides unintentinally??? They are side specific... That might wear over some 8k or so...I believe those sides shims are what "seats" those bearings...Just a guess though...

Another possibility is that they did not clean off the bearing race good enough before putting it back together. Otherwise I would believe that it was just part failure.

I'm with RIO. I'd be willing to bet that the carrier shims were switched and/or flipped. Have you ever looked at a wheel with a hubcap on it, that looked like it was "side-heavy," and it looked like it was rolling like an egg? That could have been what happened in the rear, where it only hit in that one section because it was out of round.

Just my guess....

Rolling and turning things can do weird stuff. What you have isn't normal, but it looks like a normal problem and nothing to be too worried about. I'd blame the previous installer.

mone wore out last fall but it had 75000 milles on it. i wouldn't think that 28000 miles would be enough to wear it out, unless the fluid somehow got something (like sand) in it ...

It was $400. I got to learn to install them myself. I do everything else myself and I feel like a loser having someone else work on my car.
