Yes. It's a definate possibility.
I would check the easy things first.
If you don't find anything wrong with the items listed above, then drain the gear oil in the rear end, because more than likely you'll be looking at an axle bearing at minimum. Expect to find alot of metalic particles in the oil, but what you really don't want to find is any big chunks, or gear teeth.
