Rearview mirror fell off. Need help

I have a 93 fox and the mirror fell off. I need to seperate the arm of the mirror from the metal plate that is supposed to be glued to the windshield. There is a slot on the underside of the arm where it meets the metal part. Some how the mirror arm clips onto the metal piece. Anyone have experience with this? I need to seperate these pieces so I can glue the metal part back on the windshield and let it cure before adding the weight of the mirror on it.

I took a flat screwdriver and a hammer and just hammered it out...worked fine for me. Theres just a little clip that holds it on the otherside...dont be afraid of giving it a little muscle. Just be careful of putting it in a vice, because you dont want to take paint off the mirror. I'd have someone hold it for you while you bang it out, or put it on the edge of a cardboard box.

I don't know what to tell you, but the whole mirror assembly came off my car.

That's normally how it happens, the little metal piece slides in and out of the mirror. Just take a screwdriver and hammer it out. You should be able to pull it out with plyers even. Once you have it out, just reglue it and let it dry for a little bit and then you slide the mirror assembly back on. Piece of cake really.

There is a small allen bolt holding the mirror onto the metal piece, loosen that and your golden.

Ditto the hex screw. I've had four Fox's- '79,'84,'89,and '91, and every one of them had a hex (allen) screw keeping the arm from sliding off the plate. I would think you all should too...? It gets loose over time and causes most mirrors to rattle, and this in turn eventually pops the glue and it falls off. I've had it happen twice, and both times a windshield store put it back- one guy did it for free, the other charged me five bucks. Unless you have a glue you KNOW will hold, that's the best bet. Or you could get a mirror like mine, that doesn't use it:

I thought they had a hex head bolt that holds them in, but couldn't remember if it was the Jeep or the Stangs - I knew I was right. Ditto about the windshield place...they have good glue, not some stuff you buy at wal-mart or Autozone and do yourself....$5 is about what you'd pay for the glue at the store and this way it's good stuff

stangbear: I've seen that picture before I think; that mirror cracks me up....bet if you didn't have it, you'd feel wierd now since you're so used to it.

OHyeah! My wife's car still has the factory mirror, and every time I drive it I feel blind. I'm so used to every off the wall thing I've done to my car that at this point, that driving almost anything else scares me.

unfortunately there is NO exposed jam nut holding that plate to the back. There is a small bump on the side where a screw might go. I scraped some of the paint off that spot and there was no screw underneath.
I'm going to try using a scewdriver and a hammer to try and get it off.
