I am thinking on rebuilding my 98' engine...can anyone list all the parts I need to get and a brief descrition of the work that has to be done in order to make that old eninge like new again...Thanks!
Ok well first of all if your going to do it do it right and have fun
1. Go to advance auto parts, (Or maybe another autoparts, but i work here so i know we have it) you can order the HEAD GASKET SET this will include
A) Head Gaskets
B) Water Outlet Gasket
C) Exhaust Manifold Gaskets
D) Valve Cover Gaskets
E) Valve Stem Gaskets
F) Water Pump Gasket
thats what it brings for sure, i can check for sure and let you know by tommorow but you will also need
F) Oil pan Gasket
G) Timing Chain Gasket
H) Front Main Seal (Crankshaft Seal)
I think that is all for Gaskets. Now on to parts...
A) Push Rods
B) Valves
C) Oil Pump
D) Rockers
E) Valve Springs
F) Crankshaft
G) Piston Rings (Pistons depending on the condition of them)
H) Connecting Rod Bearings
I) Connecting Rods (Would make it stronger and last longer second time around)
J) Fuel Injectors (Just to be safe, But optional)
K) Water Pump
L) Hoses (As some of the old hoses tend to fall apart while rebuilding)
M) Fuel Pump (Might also be a good idea too)
You will also need to have the heads resurfaced.
I think that might be all but i still have a feeling I am forgetting some things but forgive me for anything i might have left out, And while i am at work tommorow i will look into it more and get some prices if you would like as well and tell you what the sets bring as well. Hope i helped:SNSign:
P.S.
What would also be a good idea is to buy a engine parts cleaner tub and engine parts cleaner to clean any parts you might be keeping such as the valve covers and brackets and so forth. It would also be a good idea that while everything is apart that you Completly clean the block, either with kerosine (If i spelled it right) or with engine parts cleaner.
no problem, i know i said i was going to look into it today, but there was a lot of problems at work today, and i almost snapped a couple of necks, so yea sorry, but tommorow i will try and have those prices up by 11pm.
You can re-use the rods if they're good. Just fit them with ARP bolts.
Honestly, if you can find a reputable place that sells remanufactured engines, you might get out cheaper. But even if you do that, it's a good idea to go over the engine a torque wrench and check the measurements. Also the ARP rod bolt suggestion is a good idea here too.
If you do get a machine shop to build your engine, it's a perfect time to P&P you heads and intake. Also, most shops will go over the block with a dremel to clean up the oil passages for better flow. That's usually around $100.
That is the picture of everything that the head gasket set will bring, its only $98.88, i dont think thats too bad. And i was going to mention the head bolts as well today since i realized that i left it out.
As for new pistons, i would upgrade with some stock forged pistons, instead of the factory cast pistons for longevity and resistance to basic bolt ons and maybe mild boost.
I would go with any of the main bearing that dont go to a reground crank, never use a crank that has been regrounded because reground cranks are not going to hold up nearly as well as a brand new stock crank, or better yet a stroked crank
And about what '66 coupe said about P&Ping your heads and intake. I think its a great idea too if you want 190hp, extra HP is always great If you would like more info just go ahead and ask .
