Stephen,
I have rebuilt a few 289's. When replacing the timing gears, ensure that the thickness of the excintric stand off is the same otherwise you'll be boring a hole right into the water cavity through the timing gear cover. I believe that the two differant thickness gears carrying the same part number. Second tip is when adjusting valves, one referance stated that you turn 2 more complete turns after no free play in push rods, however on a later model 289, 2 turns was too much and it was closer to 1 1/2. Of course you can always adjust while running too.
Good Luck
