I bought a "remanufactured" steering box from Borgeson (www.borgeson.com) and am really satisifed with it. Cost was about $365 shipped and it works really well. There was an article in the first Ford Builder magazine about how these boxes are put together and I was inmpressed by that because I have two locally-rebuilt boxes that are, to put it mildly, junk. Borgeson also offers a 3-year warranty and will pay $40 for your core.
The steering setups in these cars were originally sort of loose, but at the time all were about the same so it didn't make any difference. I believe we have all been spoiled by the feel of the steering systems in our modern cars. I remember reading roiad tests of cars back in the 60s and 70s and remarks were made about how much play there was in a particular car's steering wheel.
