redlining a pi 2v gt :(

Hey stangalangers,

I was doing a burnout the other day ( which I never do, except that my buddy wanted to see one....stupid me!! ) and I revved it to 4 grand and dumped the clutch: well I have 3.73's so I quickly revved to 6500 rpm in first before I shifted into 2nd. I am not sure where the stock rev limiter is on the 99-04 gt's and I have a superchips max microtuner 91 octane tune on the car so I don't know if the stock rev limiter was removed w/ this or not. I did a forum search and regretfully I didn't fine a specific enough answer regarding this type of incident. I am normally very sweet to this car and usually shift between 2k-2.6k in daily driving and rarely get on it. I have heard that you can redline these cars a bit (though I know it's not suggested) and be o.k. but I just want to make sure it didn't float the valves or anything. It still drives great and I run royal purple 5w20 every 4k miles. Am I worrying too much or should I be really concerned with the fact that I revved it this high? Either way I will not do it again!!!!

you are worrying way too much...just don't do it too often...your stock rev limiter on 99-04 gts is 5800 but with a chip it may have been removed...i know mine was raised to 6700 (dont' know why) with my sct xcal2...i used to shift right at 6000 rpms but now i shift right at redline at 5800

Granted, I have a '97, but I don't think that you need to worry. Generally when I get on it, I'll shift between 5800-6K. I know it's not the best thing in the world for it, but I have yet to have an issue. My superchip tuner threw a code at me once about an over rev, but that was a few winters back and it still runs great.

right on man... I didn't know that the factory rev limiter was that low (5800) it seems like it's been able to go to 6k since before I had the tuner. I'm glad to here it's not a life or death issue though!

The rev limiter is higher then 5800 (the redline on the tach and the rev limiter are different things). Someone correct me if im wrong but i think the rev limiter is set somewhere around 6100. Yours could have been removed by the chip. When doing burnouts or just revving in neutral you can go past the rev limiter because the rpm's are increasing very quickly and it takes the car some time to cut the power when the rev limiter kicks in. I think if you hurt something though your car wouldnt be running well. Its no big deal but like everyone said dont keep doing it.

word. I won't don't worry!!!! I think that if i remember correctly the factory redline is set at 5800 rpm which is actually 200 rpm shy of the reall 6k redline...I know I read that in a mmff or 5.0 magazine somewhere!!! I would never intentionally rev it that high it's just that I haven't spun 'em since I had the gear put in and it snuck up to that rpm real quick on me! Thanks for the input everyone!!!!

I would say its not bad to do that once in a while but not regularly.

from what I've read it is actually very stressful on your bearings if you drive at too LOW rpms (as in driving in a gear higher than you should be)

maybe the rev limiter is 6250, but if you want the engine to live a great life, it's best if you shift by 5800-6000 especially if you are going to put a blower on the car

I also have a 01 Gt (automatic) and I was running the same superchips tune you have until recently. If you just upload the superchips 91 tune without making any adjustments, it will raise the limiter to 6500. The firsttime I held her to the floor in first till it shifted, I was watching the tach thinking something wasn't right when it went past 6100...but the way its set up, it maxes out all the adjustments unless you change them.
The stock tune on mine shifts at 6100 on the 1-2 shift, and 5800 on the 2-3 shift.

yea your fine. dont do it often though. ive reved mine out a good bit before not paying attention but she hit the limiter. just be worried when it does that and u hear a pretty good pop.

Actually the 2 stock bin files I have show it at 6050. They are for a 99 and on 01, so it could have changed after that.

I'd say that is accurate, at least on mine.... rev limiter seems to come in just right off of 6k.

stock rev limiter,at least on my 96 is 6250 and then its fuel cut,your getting paranoid,1 time hitting rev limiter is nothing,just dont do it everyday.

I have a new engine with forged internals, and I accidentally took it up to 7k one time, and almost ***** myself thinking a I hurt it. But everyhting was fine. There really isn't any reason to go beyond 5800 rpm, I usually shift at 5800 in 1st, and 5600 after for maximum performance, any later, and you'll loose power(unless you have different cams) and your car will pitch to much. When I was into doing burn outs, I usually rode the throttle at about 3500-4000 rpms, keeping an eye on the tach so it wouldn't go too high.

yeah i kinda forgot to watch the tach until i looked down and saw that i was at 6500!!! i know the rotating assembly can handle some revs, but what is it about the valvetrain that can't, is it the valvesprings that are the weak link?.....that's what i've heard. my buddy's got a built lower end just like you...he was driving to work one morning w/ his stock motor when it was raining real hard and took a corner into a huge puddle that sucked water up into his fenderwell bbk cai!!!! i felt for him but he's really got something to work with now!!!!! oh yeah and he did away w/ the fenderwell cai after that!!!!!
