Reflections on Gear Installation....Usual questions answered inside

Alright, l recently was fed up with the constant nagging question in my head of "3:73.....4:10....3:73" So I took it like a man, didn't fear the gear, and went with some Motive 4:10's.

Question #1: Are you happy with your decision to go with 4:10 vs. 3:73?
-Yes, absolutly. Everyone, and i repeat, EVERYONE with an automatic that doesnt plan on doing any power adder mods or making there mustang into a strickly performance stang definatly should choose 4:10. I would of been horrified if i would of picked 3:73.
Question #2: Where did you get your gears at?
-I bought my gears off of www.mustangtuning.com. Very quick, and right now they are running a speacial discount and free shipping. Highly recommended.
Question #3: Is there any difference between FRPP gears and Motive?
-In my opinion, no. I have ridden in many mustangs with FRPP and now Motive gears and have come to the conclusion that almost all gears are created equal. It all comes down to the installer. If you pick an unreliable, shady, inexperienced installer or mechanic, well....i hope your happy with gear whine. See question #6 for more details.
Question #4: How off is your speedometer?
-I would say that my speedo is off by about 8-10 mph after 40 mph. I believe i had my mechanic install a 23 tooth drive gear and even with that, its still off by a little.
Question #5: How is hiway driving?
-I have a mac o/r h-pipe and flowmaster 2 chamber and i am perfectly content with the sound. I can actually barley hear it when im on I-435. Of course your car will rev higher, but not by much. Disregard all of the rumors about it will be at 3,000RPM at 65 MPH. Because it wont. However, you will notice a decrease in your gas milage due to the higher reving. But did you really buy a mustang to worry about gas milage???
Question #6: Will my gas milage decrease?
-I have heard some crazy claims while i have been on this forum about gas milage taking a huge dive after installation of gears. That is just plain NOT TRUE. I have had my 4:10's in now for about 3 months and have lost about 1-2 miles per gallon. You will think you're loosing gas milage because you're going to want to lay into the gas pedal ALOT more now. But after the "newness" of the gears wears off, your gas milage will return. Some people talk about more revs=less milage....well im still waiting for the proof about that myth.
Question #7: Will the gears really whine?
-Well they will if there installed crappy. I had my gears installed by a 15 year veteran that works at Thoroughbred Ford. Obviously he knew what he was doing. As mentioned in quetsion #3, if you have a rookie mechanic or even a veteran mechanic that is new to the installation of gears, then your going to come out with whining gears and you could possibly ruin your 8.8.
Question #8: What about the shift points? Will I hit the rev limiter?
-Well seeing as i have an AODE, i believe that it is possible to "tap" (and i use that term loosly) the limiter in the 1st to 2nd gear shift. Other than that i really can't see the rev limiter being hit in any other gear except OD when/if you try and top your car out.
Question #9: How much will it cost to put in my gears and could I install them myself?
-I have heard prices from $150-$1400(Ford Dealership) I had my gears installed by a Ford mechanic that has been working there for 15 years. So it was obvious that he knew what he was doing.
-I also strongly suggest that you do NOT install your gear by yourself unless you are very mechanically inclined. mo_dingo did a write up of what it took to install his gears. It can be found by clicking here. If you start to become confused when reading it, then your probably not up to par with installing your own gears.
Question #10: How loud will my stang be when cruising on the hiway?
-I have flowmaster 40's and an off road h-pipe and i cruise at about 2300 rpms at 65-70 mph. Flowmasters are known for their drone and it really isnt that loud when im on the hiway. But again, whats the point of buying aftermarket exhaust if your worried about the noise it makes??? :)

Tips after your gears are installed:
  • Take a ride around the block (prefferably with your friend/mechanic that installed them)
  • Roll up your windows, turn off the radio, and listen for the infamous gear whine.
  • If its there....TAKE IT BACK. You didnt just spend $300+ to have a noisy annoying mustang
  • "Break in your new gears"....Some say this isnt needed, but better safe than sorry. Drive for 15 to 30 minutes and then park it for an hour. Do this twice more then let it sit overnight.
  • And most importantly, romp the hell out of your "new" car. Announce to the world that you are the proud new owner of a mustang with a new set of gear in it and you are taking your energy out on your tires. Leave those long black marks on the pavment. Piss someone off.
It would be nice if this would be made a sticky or put in the FAQ section because im sure we are all tired of seeing the threads about gears. And no, i will not write "sparknotes" or sum this up. If you have a serious question about gears, then you can take the time to read through this. If anyone has anymore questions, go ahead and post them and i will add to this list. Thanks and hope this helps.

Well at first, you can't really get on the throttle if you are being nice to them. But once you go all the way through 4th gear @ 5000 rpm's you really feel the new pull.

3rd gear and 4th gear feel great now. It feels like I added 50-60hp.

so another question that has been brought up 10 million times! What did the gears do as far as shift points seeing as you have an automatic. Does it shift where it should or are the stories of bouncing off the rev limiter just BS? One more? What did you pay for install and what kind of place did you have them done at? Regular mechanic shop or a mustang specialist?

well i put up another FAQ that will answer yours. Its number 7. And thats why i typed up all that crap. so if people have a serious question that isnt on there, i can add it. because i plan to bump this every month.

But to answer your other question. I payed $230 for my install by a guy that has been working at a certified Roush/SVT/Saleen lot for 15 years. Well obviously the lot wasnt certified then because these guys really didnt exist but anyway!!! He has been a Ford mechanic for 15 years. I would strongly suggest, as in question 6, a professional do this. not your average person, as you can seriously mess up your car.
