My stator is going bad and I don't know if I should buy a remanufactured distributor or just replace the stator. How difficult is it to replace the stator? Should I just spend about 40 bucks more and just slide in a remanufactured distributor. Does a distributor wear out over time? Sorry so many questions. But I need help making the decision. My car has 113,000 miles if that is needed in the decision making.

I would get the reman'd dizzy. The stock style dizzy has a bushing that wears over time. And this directly can affect the stator/vane interface.

Furthermore, the cam gear can be a pain to get lined back up. A bearing splitter works OK for the task but there is a special tool for it (about 60 bucks).

Good luck.

Id buy the whole new distributor. My car had been throwing the "stator code" for a while and then the bushings went bad. Sounded like a squeeling pig. Just spend the few extra billz and buy a whole distributor. Easier install too.

I'd hate to agree but I think I have to, the little work involved in replacing the stator and rebuilding the dizzy was quite frustrating at times with the basic hand tools I used. I would opt for a remanufactured job.

A-1 Cardone part # 30-2888, should be under $100 ($90-$95). Bring your old one to the store so they don't charge for a core.

If you do decise to replace the guts and not the whole thing, MARK the position of the cam gear with a scored mark. That pin hole is never straight and only likes the original position. I would also say that you can fold in the bottom of the shaft if you are not careful and the oil pump drive shaft will not fit back into it smooth. I had to file mine back to get the correct opening. I did find some new seals though and purchased them at NAPA. They crossed the number I brought to them, Chicago Rawhide.
