Replacing my timing chain and manual calls for a special tool for removing crankshaft seal. Is there a way to replace w/o tool - also where do you put sealer on it? Appreciate any help. thanks

If it still has a rope seal, you need the tool. If it's the split seal, you could get it to come out without a special tool. Just be carefull and don't scratch the crank seal journal. If you have an 80's to 2001 block, it's got a one piece seal and you'll need to pull the transmission back to remove the seal, once the trans. is pulled back the seal is easy to remove with a screw driver.

Is it common practice to replace the rear crank seal when replacing a timing chain? I figured this was about the crank seal in the timing cover.

Yea, I guess that would be the seal he's talking about. Threw me off in asking about the special tool.

I for one didn't know there was a tool to remove the 2-piece rear seals.

For the front one, I just knock the old one out(if possible) and knock the new one in with a block of wood and a hammer. Just sure NOT to break the timing cover. I had to cut the old one out of the timing cover with a Dremel on an '89 5.0 once.

Yeh the timing chain seal was what I was talking about. In ford shop manual they show a jig that goes around it to pull it off.

All you need is a slim flat blade a pry it out. Or a seal puller, has a handle and two hooked ends in a "T" shape.
