Sound deadener install

Will be installing my carpet soon and I need to install the sound deadener matting I purchased.... Never done this before and I was looking for some advice to get me going
12 X 18 sheets.. Do I start on the transmission tunnel and work my way to both sides and back? Or can I just lay full sheets than come back and fill in? Can I overlap the material? Some of the original " tar " based sound deadener is still in a few areas.. Do I need to remove all of it or can I go over it if its not flaking off??
Did purchase a 3 pack of rollers to roll the new stuff down.....
Any advice is appreciated...

I used Dyna Mat on the Junk Pyle, after scuffing the worn areas that had surface rust, etching primer and rattle can leftovers, I started at the toe boards where the firewall insulation stopped and worked my way back to the tailinghts, full sheets first then cut and filled the rest.
Made a difference, before the carpet got really warm but after a noticeable difference, road noise was reduced also.

Just me but I removed all of the old sound deadener. Just because it has good adhesion now doesn't mean it will later down the road and then the deadener is useless. You do not need 100% coverage. When I did the Coupe and the T-Bird I checker boarded the matting. This is what we did at the car stereo shop I worked at and it performed well and did not cost as a much.

I don't do the cover the whole car thing in it.... Only put it where sound resonates when tapping the sheet metal, doors, some areas of the pan, roof, quarters etc, the weight is what cuts out the squeaks and rattles and makes stuff feel solid vs tinny. I typical Use a lighter foam with foil backing or tape for heat and sound dampening. Foil side down if trying to block heat soak. Last time I didn't I used a cheaper line under modigt you can find on fleabay or other sites, but think prices have gone up, I grabbed em off temu, was under $50 for 25sqft of 80mil mat and 15sq feet of there 3 layer foam liner.

You won't need any rollers
You will need more that you anticipated / bought
I buy it by the roll (Dynamat), cut it into pieces and overlap it a lot
I do the whole bottom of the floor and also buy the carpet pad for the vehicle I am working on
