most owners who did a dyno test usually lost up to 5rwhp by removing the air silencer

Because it brings warmer air into the engine.
The air silencer acts as a CAI.
Trimming the end of the snorkle seems to yeild the best results.
By trimming the snorkle you enlarge the opening which alows more air to enter, yet still maintains the CAI effect by sucking air from the fender.

LOL. I would like to see the link to the losing the horsepower with taking the air silencer out. The motor is still sucking in air from the fenderwell.

The best cold air you can get is put a K&N in the factory airbox ,with the silencer gone, with some sort of tube going from the mass air to the throttle body. I would go with a plastic one but it doesn;'t really matter. If the tube is metal it may heat up but the air is travelling so fast through there that it will not have time to get hot.

You have a valid point Matt, 03 Cobras make 400 HP with crap installed.

BUT, if you due exhaust mods more air may be needed.........

I found the volant kit better then the factory system.
Why???
Sucks air from the SAME spot............
better flowing main pipe was the plus.....

Did you try dynoing your car with the air silencer out and a higher flowing tube that goes from the mass air to the tb. If you did and lost hp then you have a perfect reason why you didn't put a cai on your car. there is some gain that can be made off of a cai . Not much but there is some.

I can see you losing power on a dyno, due to the warm temps ext ext, but when your moving on the street, outside air is constantly flying through...

There was a big debate about this on my previous ford... again the removing the silencer cutting the air box lost power on the dyno, yet some how 1/4 mile times were a pinch faster.

Actually at the drag strip I would suspect better 1/4 mile times with the silencer removed as well as removing the headlight. No need to snorkel in the fender when you have air rushing right in from the front.

Getting cooler air from the fenderwell is always better than inside the engine compartment but don't cut the filter housing in any way, shape, or form. By removing the snorkle (air silencer) you are still drawing air from the fender. It's ok...you did a good thing.

well if u look on the air box there is going to be a rubber piece that is connected to it it will run into the fenderwell. Unbolt the air box then remove it u will see the air silencer is connected pull it out. the reassemble.

Nah, I've spent enough money dyno testing plenums. If I thought I was losing HP, I might have done it.

Now that the Kenne Bell goes in on Saturday, I'll be getting their air intake setup and won't ever have to worry about this again!

bingo.. look into this http://www.roushparts.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=SM01-8105-A with a K&N filter, with removed silencer, and then plenum/throttle body if you feel like it.
