removing a pilot bearing

Go to Autozone or other major auto parts store and borrow a pilot bearing puller. They will only charge you a deposit that is refunded when you return the tool. It will remove the pilot bearing without doing any damage to the crankshaft.

You shouldn't really be hitting the bearing at all! Go rent the puller and use that. I think you may be thinking of the grease/soap method where you pack grease/soap chips in behind the bearing and then take a socket that will barely fit through the hole in the center of the bearing and whack away at that and by hydraulic force, the bearing will come - I used grease and it turned into a complete mess - got the bastard out though!

Dont use the grease hydraulic method! Its too messy. Rent the bearing puller as suggested by jrickter. At autozone its 116 dollars. yeah alot but its just a deposit you get it all back. Also make sure you get it all out. If just the middle part comes out you'll have to make sure and clear all the needle bearings out with ur finger then use a bigger bearing puller to get the outer ring out. Good Luck!

You may have to resort to a slide hammer type puller - get a "loaner" from Autozone or somewhere.

You can not pound a pilot bearing out. Get a pilot bearing puller tool like others have said. Maybe buy one for your toolbox so you have it forever.
