Removing Door Ding Strips?

Well im just about to go remove them. Im worried that there might be some faded paint underneath but as suggested im going to lift up a corner and check.

Im pretty sure there WILL be faded paint, but if its not too bad im going to go through with it anyways, i convinced myself last summer that i liked them... but seeing pictures of the cobra R again changed my mind.

Im looking for suggestions on how to remove them.

Im thinking I'll use dental floss to get underneath of them... but im not sure on how to get rid of any sticky glue that they might leave, any suggestions?

Also realise its winter here and i wont be able to give it a proper wash.

Also, should i warm them up before trying to remove them? (probably about -10celcius in the garage its stored in)

Hot water and hope for the best?

Why not wait until the spring or summer? If you must remove them, I would go to the store and get some adhesive remover. Take a blow dryer and heat the strip up a bit (not too hot) and pull back on the molding and spray the remover behind it. It should pull off after no time.

If for some crazy reason, that doesnt work....just use the dental floss method. And the adhesive remove will melt away any glue...just make sure you wipe it off or the glue will just move down your door. I sprayed my cars paint with it and its doesnt do anything to the finish...but I wouldnt just let it set on there just in case. (also read the label just to make sure they havnt changed anything)

I pulled mine off using my daughters Hello Kitty hair blow dryer. I think a regular blow dryer might work as well .

But seriously, apply heat and slowly pull it off. The extra two way tape that stays on the door rubs of with your finger.

I had no problem with paint fade.

Well i pulled up a corner after fighting with it for about an hour and it left a good 4 mm of that double sided tape.... the plastic came off and the entire thing of tape stayed on... i got distracted and got my bike going instead, i finally got it started... and then the fuel line broke and i got covered in gas, so i reattatched it got gas, and found out gas stations dont sell 2stroke oil anymore ***WTF*** yea i was pretty mad..

ill go out and try the old hairdrying rip off and rub method in a minute, the corner had no faded paint so im just going to rip the whole thing off, if the tape doesnt come off ill grab some adhesive remover tommorrow while im picking up 2stroke oil.

spray it down with wd40 first. it weakens the sticky part. when you get it off spray more on the remaining goo and it will come off easily.

won't wd40 eat the paint???

Got one strip off, left basically 90% of the black goo behind, and it DOES NOT rub off with your fingers, i got about 1 inch of it off... sigh... get back to me about that WD40 asap, that sounds like it would work, as long as it doesn't damage the paint.

As a plus, the paint isn't faded, and even with the big dirty black strip down the side of my door it still looks better. It looks like a new car, and i was starting to get bored with it, so this is a plus (y) saves me money on having to buy a new hood.

While im out picking up my oil/fuel line/goo-gone im going to pick up some plugs so i can take off my spoiler too

Ok, its done. Here's what i learned:

Heating it up and pulling it off, using no adhesive remover... WORST IDEA EVER. My thumbs are bleeding and my nails are partially ripped off from peeling off all the tape, the only thing that came off was the plastic strip, the tape remained on the car. I used WD40 and it helped, but it still took forevor and was very painful.

Other side i decided i'd heat it up first, then cover it in WD40. Pealed it off and it took off 70% of the ****, then just rubbed at it and it sort of rolled off. Then used WD40 and wiped the remainder off.

In total it took approximately 4 and a half hours. Probably the hardest thing i've ever had to do to any car i've owned. This was much harder then having to drop the motor to have to install an alternator on my last car.

All in all it was worth it though, i think it looks 90 times better. I can definately see how a pressure washer would have ripped it right off, i definately recommend that. (when its not -10 outside)

Ok well maybe the longer those things are on the car the harder it is to get them off. It took me MAX an hour to do and I ROLLED off the tape with my finger with no bleeding.

Man, i'm so glad my GT didn't come with that.

I actually saw a MACH1 with them on not too long ago.

WHo makes a distinction as to what cars get these? Most V6's i see have them, but some of the "better" model V6's don't. I've also seen several GT's from time to time and now a Mach 1.

They are actually a $100 option so when you would order a FULLY loaded Mustang, most likely you'd have them on the car. Of course the option is available on any Stang.
