Having finally managed to remove both engine block drain plugs I have found a build up of crap behind them. Would anyone recommend removal of one or two freeze plugs to get a better look at the condition of the cooling galleries?

If you already have the engine out of the car, Yeah, new freeze plugs are cheap. But if the engine is still in the car, it seems near impossible to access them to squarely install them even if you manage to get them out.

Even after an engine has been hot tanked, it is still full of casting sand. Any that you can get out will aid in cooling.

Drive a big screw driver into it and pry it out.
