Removing gauge needles?

How do you remove the needles on the factory gauges? I need to pull the fuel gauge out. Don't want to just pull real hard and break them.

I've read where people have used a fork to pry the needle off of the pin before. It puts equal leverage on both sides while you pry up on it. Good luck!
