How do I get the pulley off of the 3G alternator?? My main concern is stopping the pulley/fan from spinning while attempting to loosen the bolt
thanks

Air impact... and you need one to tighten the pulley back on to make sure it doesn't slip. Just drop by your local speed shop--takes like a minute. Mine helped me out as a favor for free.

PepBoys will usually do the same thing for you. Remove the alternator and have a friend give you a ride to a place with an impact. It will take them less than a minute to remove and reinstall. You're a long way off - or I'd tell you to bring that thing over't the house and we'll have that puppy off/on in a second!

You have an impact wrench? Put a regular socket on it (if you have the right size) -- it'll spin it right off.

it's easy, even without an impact. get a screwdrive and put that in the fan blades then use a socket and breakover bar. that is what i use on my alt. out of the 91 tbird and it looks exactly like the 3g.

I have an impact wrench.. but i don't have the right size for it.

If i stick a screwdriver in the fan.. won't it bend the blades?

Yeah, it's real easy to bend the blades - not a good idea unless you're stuck on the side of the road somewhere. Not to mention, if you happen to forget to disconnect the battery, and and you stick a screw driver down in there - well, it is possible to bring the name 'big sparky' to life if you know what I mean. If I were you, I'd invest a few bucks and buy the correct sized socket.

that was gold. I think I'll just go get it done somewhere, that socket isn't real popular and I doubt I'll ever need it again

Murphy's law for tools - don't buy it, you'll need it again the next day. Buy it - then you'll never need it again.

I don't want to sabotage the thread with my own question but how can I run an ASP overdrive pulley without the belt slipping? It makes a loud high pitched "chirp" sound on startup and I'm assuming it's the belt slipping. FYI, this is also on a 3G application.

get a smaller belt. Or if that doesn't work, get a new tensioner

Oh, the misery and the woe... It's true, it's true. :damnit:

I would personally buy the socket. Just because you'll never know if you'll need it again, or if maybe one of your friends or family needs it you can help them out.

Murphy's corollary - buy it, loan it to someone - they will break it or lose it.

I'm with Mike - buy it; you'll use it again, or you'll be able to help someone else out.

That's only funny because it's so, so true.

The moral of the story? Sell your cars and your tools, ride a 10-speed and take up stamp collecting. You'll avoid a lot of aggravation that way.
