When I removed the starter to check it out, I took the cover off of the lever that pushes the starter gar out to the flywheel. It had pressure on it. THe cover had been dented and was holding the gear out just enough to stay engaged. Now fixed. Thanks again for the help, add this one to the possible causes.

Did you 'persuade' the dent a bit? Use a SFH or BFH?

SFH with a punch did the job. No worries since then.
