Hello, all.. I was wondering if there was any special care, other than the obvious, to do, while installing a new gauge cluster on my 96 gt w/150 mph spedo? My Odometer, Trip meter, temp and oil gauges have stopped working and i found a nice cluster on eBay with a full money back warranty for 100 bucks. Will there be anything i need to keep from the old one? Is there any kind of weird security system our cars have, that wont allow them to have a different cluster? Thanks a lot!

Edit: well, they ended the auction on the cluster i wanted.. so anyone know where i can purchase a stock 96 gt cluster, where everything works?

darkmajesty06:

You can try MPS Auto Salvage. They have a lot of parts from a wide range of model years. Otherwise, you can usually find gauge clusters in the local salvage yards.

mpsautosalvage.com is the site.

Your State probably requires that you provide them with an affadavit stating that the odometer has been replaced and stating the old and new odometer readings. Otherwise, they may think you are trying to roll back (or roll forward) the odometer. Check with the Dept. of Revenue in your State.

I'm not sure about the 96 gt's, but you might have an issue w/the PATS security system because in some SN95 the stock gear cluster is electronically "tailor made" for that car, so you might have to get the dealership to reprogram the computer.

Wow, that sucks.. they say on ebay that you need to keep a board off the back of your cluster to put on the new one. Maybe that keeps all this from happening. That makes the 200 bucks even harder to swallow now. Has anyone ever done a cluster swap on the 96-98? Also thanks a lot for the info!!

darkmajesty06:

The place I mentioned has instrument clusters for your model year. And they don't cost $200.

The +99's have a PATS-linked board on the instrument cluster so it has to be swapped. I don't recall a removable circuit board on the '98 instrument cluster and '98 had a slightly different PATS setup than '96-'97 models.

Save yourself the worry and take a look at the salvage site.

Yeah, I think im going to order one from there. Once I get it, well see what kind of troubles it incurs for me. Meanwhile, if anyone has swapped a cluster in a 97, let me know if you had problems. Thanks!
