Replacing idler pulley

remove the serpentine belt, will require either a 3/8 or 1/2 drive breaker bar or serpentine belt tool. dont remember which one, i just have all 3. use an impact gun and unbolt the 13 or 15mm bolt holding on the idler pulley. installation is the revere of uninstall.

I used a breaker bar to remove the pulley nut ... in case you don't have an impact.

ya that works too. i have electric impact guns for use in my house, dont have an air compressor yet. i used the air guns at work.

Sorry to bring an old thread back from the dead. But my idler pulley is making noise and it has some side to side play in it so i figure i will replace it. As you said it doesn't sound that hard to remove, but when i re-install it would i have to TQ it down? I don't have a tq-wrench.

I just did mine , no need for impact guns. Just spray some WD 40 or PB Blaster, that's it. Too easy you should not even ask for help

This is something that you just do... The only thing you might search for would be belt routing diagram. It real easy to change. I got one at AutoZone for $14.

just use some locktite and that's it. Don't over do it or might snap the bolt

Update: I just changed this earlier today, real quick like. Started it up, and the noise is still there. It's still coming from the same general area around the pulley system. Might it be the belt tensioner going bad and making noise??

the sound is your automatic belt tensioner, the pulley is steel and the tensioner is aluminum so it wears down and begins to lightly grind causing usually a squeak or moan. I replaced mine and it fixed the noise right up

The smooth one at the top closest to the alternator.

Ok, so do i remove the tensioner and then remove the pulley attached to it? Or do i have to replace the whole tensioner and pulley?

Yes, But if you replace the tensioner it comes with a new pulley installed.
