Results of the autopsy

Pulled the motor out today to find out what was ticking. Turns out two lobes on the cam were going flat. Both were for the number 7 cylinder. Unfortunately the metal from the cam made it to the main bearings as well. So they all have a nice little groove running next to the oil groove. After finding all that I called it a day. At least I have an excuse to make it faster. Now where did my wife hide the checkbook......................

at least you found the problem. Mine recently started ticking too, I have great oil pressure at this time, and am not sure what the problem is yet. Was yours losing oil pressure as this occurred?

Oh man, sorry to hear that Bob. Hopefully you can just toss a ring and bearing kit in it, and get yourself a new cam.

Keep your chin up, and look in her purse for the checkbook, they know we hate to go in there, so that's probably where she put it.

The oil pressure had gone down right before all this started. No thanks to a bad Fram oil filter. Needless to say I won't be using those on any of my cars. I'm going to pull the heads so I can check the cylinder walls as well. Might as well do it right. Plus, a few of the pistons look like they might have some score marks on them. Not a good thing at all.

Already checked there. I'm thinking the desk is the next likely place.

Time for a stroker kit from Coast.

Fram filters are pretty, but they suck.

I hate Fram filters. I read a story online where one guy bought and cut up a bunch of filters and 2 of the frams had internal defects that let the oil pass without being filtered at all. Use only Motorcraft.

K&N makes a filter, but that seems a bit excessive--it is around $10, if memory serves.

Checkbook? Try the glovebox of her car. I've found our checkbook there before.

I don't think there's much description needed. The two rounded lobes went to the number 7 cylinder and the lifter matches the lobe. And if you look at the other pics you can see the gouge I was talking about in the bearings. The bright side is that the crank doesn't look scratched. I just can't bring myself to pulling the heads off though.

Oh, and ignore the goofball in the top pic.

i only use motorcraft or purolator on the stang. the jeep i use whatever the oil change place puts on it, you could run that 4.0 in the jeep with 2 quarts for 50,000 miles and i swear it wouldn't hurt the damn thing, that has to one of the toughest motors ever built. mine has 180,000 miles on it now, the rest of the cherokee is falling apart around the motor, but that 4.0L straight six just keeps on going and going and going, take a licking (no ticking ) and keeps on going and going and.........well you get the idea

No, it was a bad oil filter. The filtering element inside wasn't attatched to the top part of the filter and blocked most of the holes. So the oil could get in, but couldn't get out.

Bob, I spotted the problem. You painted that thing Chevy orange, and the poor engine got confused and wiped out the cam.

Next time, paint that bad boy Ford blue, and you won't run into these pesky problems.

That cam is evil :x

Its mere presence caused my engines piston rings to collapse and now they've done it to mustang70 too. Sucks man... on the bright side I'm really bored so if you need any help with anything I could come down and help ya out.

For the 15 bucks (canadian) it costs for a K&N oil filter, I think it's cheap insurance.

It's red smart alleck. I wanted it too match the faded red that my car is painted.

Thanks for the warning sadbuttrue. Last time I buy something from a college kid. Actually, I'm putting the motor on the back burner for now. I'm going to try and get the rest of the drivetrain up to snuff first. And if I can swindle the Navy out of some money I can make a killer motor. Oops....did I say that out loud?

The filter fell apart last December. I think it's a little late to prove anything.

lol, well, i don't think anythings was wrong with the cam when i sold it to ya, but regardless, its definitely cursed. i really hope it wasn't anything I did, my dad and I, and several friends who knew a lot more than I did about cams at the time all checked it out and said it was fine, else I wouldn't have sold it (as cams aren't like intakes and heads, and probably shouldn't be sold on the internet used much). it did run well for a good while, didn't it? and my offer still stands

Shouldn't be too hard to do, after all they did pay $900 for an ashtray for the E-2C!
