Resurface flywheel absolutly necessary?

Hey guys Im installing a TKO 600, clutch, etc. etc. and Im kinda short on money, is it absolutly necessary to resurface the flywheel? The motor will be coming out this winter and getting an aluminum flywheel. What do you guys think?

i'd say it ultimately depends on the condition of the flywheel, much like rotors when doing brakes. I'm not sure what kind of answers you'll be besides that.

New clutch, new flywheel (or resurface). What's it cost to get it turned? Maybe $20 vs. what your new clutch cost ya.

No its not necessary for this application since you're getting a new aluminum flywheel in the winter. Won't hurt to do it though. Its about $50-$60 here to get it surfaced.

Really depends on if you are putting a new clutch in at the same time. I wouldn't want a new clutch face to hit a glazed flywheel surface. If you can't afford it then it's worth selling some sperm to get it resurfaced.

Nice cool saturday nite.. the guys are all out and the car is feeling real stong!! Your cruising in and out of the local hang out, rev.. blip rev blip!! Yeah man this guy IS bad!! Then thru the evening.. you pull up to the main street, everyone is looking... your leg has that little twich in it , you know that little shake?? You let out the clutch and Bang bang bang jerk.. shake!! YES!! refurface the flywheel!!! the 30.00 is well worth the LACK of abusement and your pride!! cool??

I have never resurfaced a flywheel when changing a clutch.


For $99 I just buy a new one and replace it.

unless you want to chew up the new clutch with the old chattered flywheel, i'd surface it. it may seem ok while your driving it, but internally, it's getting little stress cracks, and heat marks which temper and brittle up the metal. unltimately it's your call, but i'd at least surface it...$20-30 it's worth it.

I had a similar theory, but always wound up regreting not doing the flywheel. Have it resurfaced. The cost will more than be made up by the aggravation and frustration you won't experience.

Mike (Thumper) cracks me up.

I still dont get how folks dont refinish a flywheel when using a fresh mating/friction surface against it.

Kevin has the best idea.

Why pay 3-5 times as much as opposed to get it resurfaced?

Because changing it is the ideal 100% correct way.

Aliate X, can you afford to get the aluminum flywheel now? If so, it'll save you money now so you don't end up resurfacing your stock one.

To resurface my flywheel it was $25 bucks at my local machine shop. Easy stuff and cheap insurance.

I agree with JT, Kevin does have a good idea

on a bmw we don't resurface the flywheel, just inspect it and clean it off with a scotch brite attached to your wiz wheel. as far as it causing catastrophic failure, i doubt it. on a 5.0 don't you have to shim the flywheel after turning it? i bought a new flywheel, but if that is not an option, i say just clean it up and dunk it back in there.

bimmertech - No shim is needed. There is enough clutch disc material to counter the thousandths of an inch taken off of the flywheel.
