I am about to purchase a set of FMS 3.73's from DPM for $139 and I need to know which installation kit I need to get. I'm thinking I need this one:

http://www.buyfordracing.com/Shop_Cart/shopexd.asp?id=262

Is this the right one? It is $80 from DPM, and 50resto has it for $85. Then there is also that same kit for $100 which also includes axle shaft seals. Do I need these? Also, I had no idea the installation kit was so expensive. I thought it was more like $50, but if I gotta pay $80 then that's what I gotta do. Does anyone know where I can get the installation kit cheaper?

As for the oil, is this friction modifier what I need?

http://secure.50resto.com/product1.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=419

Thanks guys.

The minimum you will need is:

A pinion seal, pinion shims, differential shims, and a new crush collar. These come in the kits. You will most likely need a new inner pinion bearing as the old one may get damaged in removal.

You should be able to reuse the differential bearings, and the side shims. However, if the backlash is off, you will need a differential bearing shim kit.

If you are changing gears and want to put it back together and not fool with it, I recommend changing the axle seals. These don't come with most kits. They are so cheap and easy you might as well change them. I have removed axles several times on the same seals, so if they are working, they will be ok, but new ones are easy.

I am doing the same thing. I bought a kit with the pinion and differential shims, some extra crush collars, etc. I dont mind changing or doing stuff later, so I may not be real carefull with the seals, etc. Including oil and additive, there is about a hundred bucks of stuff in a gear change.

I would get the Ford friction modifier. At any dealer, about $6.00.

Cool. Thanks guys. I went ahead and ordered everything. There is an awesome shop in my area that told me it would be $200 for a gear install if I supplied all the parts. Can't wait to get these babies in the rear!

No, I just bought the FMS kit in the link up there. My rear-end was rebuilt less than 50k miles ago, and my trac-lok is working nicely so i'm just going to install a new set of gears and I should be set.
