Hi I have a 89 5.0 that I am rebuilding, It is a re ring job- the cylinders did not require a bore, Just a hone.

Today i was putting in the crank, new bearings .010, and new rod bearings and ARP rod bolts on the stock 302 SRP slugs when I went to install new rings....

I went to put in the compression rings and they were to fat. They look just a hair to thick to fit. Same with the oil rings. They are sealed power rings.

I thought maybe I got a wrong box. I Picked up a set of rings chromoly rings, again made by Sealed power, and same problem. I have not really put a good force on the piston ring compressor, I shouldnt have too to get them to fit right??

Anyone had similar experinces??

I dont want to reef on the piston ring compressor tool, The rings should slip right into the groves correct?

There are apparently 2 different sizes of rings listed in their catalog. One set is two 1.5 MM rings and one 4.0 MM ring. The other set is two 5/64" rings and one 3/16" ring.

You'll need to measure the old rings to see which one is correct.

You can see the listings here towards the bottom of the page -->> Federal-Mogul's Complete Automotive Light Duty Catalog - Vehicle Look-up

That's correct, I found this out in error too. I think it's the 1.5mm rings are what you need and I still have the sealed power box they came in at home. If you want me to get you the part number I can when i get home but I think if you do a search in the 5.0 forums this subject has been covered a few times. Advance auto stocks the 4.0MM rings but you will have to order the 1.5's.

thanks for the replys.

You guys were right.... I ordered the other set and they fit like a glove.

One question... For the compression rings, half of the compression rings have a somewhat shiney silver face(side that will touch the cylinder wall), the other half has a dull finish that is the same colour as the ring its self.
Does it matter which one goes up top? Both rings have have the dots to show which side is up or down.
E-458K was the ones that fit.

I know this is an old thread but I am going to post for future reference. Shiny rings go on top, dull go in the middle. The box will also say this on the lips. I picked up E-458K and they did not fit my car? Too big.
