rod bearing question

Ok i was putting my motor together last night, well today i had to pull the crank back out to trim my cylider walls for clearance.. I'm building a 347. I noticed that two of my rod bearings must have had a piece of sand on them b/c they both had a scratch in the center all the way around. Should i get new bearings or do you think they will wear down. The scratch isnt very deep. You can barley feel it with your finger nail. But i dont want to be rebuilding the bottom end in a few thousand miles.. Any input will be greatly appreciated

Rod bearings are cheap. Roughly 30 bucks or so...I would replace them all to match. Have the crank checked, but it is probably fine.

yeah the crank is fine. I havent ran the engine yet. you think that i need to replace them? or just that one

i would replace all of them and inspect the crankshaft oil holes remove all burrs and chamfer oil holes so sharp edges don't gouge or scratch new bearings and use a wire or stiff brush to clean the oil passeges in the crankshaft and clean crankshaft with solvent and dry with compressed air...i dont think sand did the dammage...

Bill is right I would lean towards some slag or sharp edges on your oil hole chamfers instead of dirt, especially since it was in the middle of the bearing. Replace the bearings they are most likely in stock at your local parts store.

I use a series of engine brushes to clean all the holes, inspect all edges and clean as noted abover.

i wouldent touch the babbit on the bearings surface either, when you get them handle the bearings by the sides and use an engine assembly lube(white lube) when putting them together..also use plasti-guage to check the bearing clearances, and compare to factory specs, good luck
