Just got my cage in from wolferacecraft......didnt come with any plates to mount to my floor for the bars to attach to. Should I just weld it right down to the car?

no you need to get like 3x3 steel plates to weld the tubes to the weld the plates to the floor to spread the stress out. if you weld just the tubes in down i dont think it can be certified either.

...what he said; it's really helpful if your plates not only attach it to the floor, but also bend up the sides of the rocker panels (inside) so you get welds/support in more than one plane. Also, the down tubes should be gussetted - not just butt-welded to the plates.

Hey, let me know how that installation went. I've been thinkin about doing that but in a coupe. Seems like its a little more difficult in a coupe. Anyone done it?

NHRA rules state 6x6 1/8 steel plate to be welded directly to the floor of unibody cars. Or to be bolted to another 6x6 plate on the opposite of the car by min of 4 3/8 bolts.

If you weld the plate to the floor, then you will have to beat or jack the floor up to hit the rest of the plate for low spots.

Mild steel must be MIG or TIG welded and chrome moly must be TIG welded. No stick or gasless wirefeed allowed.

Also be sure to weld ALL the way around every tube with as few pin holes as possible.

With that said, you can weld a horizontal bar to the rear shock towers and avoid the plate in the rear.

Also a piece of 2x3 tube can be welded from the subframe to the rocker panel and then the main hoop welded to that.

The sheet metal in the stang is very thin. A tube welded direct to the floor would be nearly worthless.

hllon4whls is correct 6" x 6" 1/8", you can bend the plates to fit where you want them.

If you weld the bar inbetween the shock towers, make sure you plate them, they will only be like 3" x 3" but some inspectors are being picky about that, just beat the plates to form them to the shock towers. Also put in 2 small wedges to connect the bar to the frame, basically you tap them into place under the bar them weld them in.

I've seen 2 cars fail NHRA inspection with out the snubby pieces, becuase some inspectors do not count the shocktower as a frame attachment point.

How's the project coming? Haven't heard from you in awhile...

....yeah, in road racing circles (PCA and BMWCCA track days) I've seen main hoops that weren't attached in the proper reinforced fashion actually pushed right through the floor pan on a roll over -- useless as a safety or structural integrity device unless they're properly attached. Weakest link and all that....

Its coming, slowly but surely, Ive been meaning to call you, but Ive been busy and you seem to be very busy yourself. Ended up grabbing my fuel system brand new from a friend about half price, so that moved the project along a little quicker.

I'm MIG welding the cage (mild steel) and then Im doing the suspension/chassis and dropping the motor in.

So far, I'm a few small parts (pushpins, bolts), 75mm TB, and mass air cal. for the 42lb injectors away from getting this thing going. I'll give you a ring.

Thanks for all this info guys, I'll let ya know how it turns out.

That is good to know. Mine is welded to the shock towers. No issues so far. The metal is fairly thick there. I have plans to fix it (one day). I rarely even go to tech. I hand in my tech card and squeak through. One of the advantages of having a permanent NHRA comp number, I guess. They havent seen me all year, so I am sure that when I do go back, they will hit me up hard.

I have a local place that carries every size and type of tubing and sheet goods you can think of. Dillsburg Airplane Works, they supply almost all the tuning to the shops around here that build chassis, sprint cars etc... they do mail order as well.

Rick, that is a lot of tube on the back end of the car!

Do you have anything that goes to the front subframe?
What is the cage legal to (ET/MPH)?
