Roller Cam

I am currently running a flat tappet cam with a roller block out a 89 5.0. My question is if I want to bring it back to a roller motor what all do I need to replace. My list includes new roller rockers, roller lifters, cam, pushrods, springs. Is it necessary to change the timing chain.....am I missing anything else?

Also I am guessing this will cost me close to $1,000 bucks is it worth it?

Timing set is the same for both, you do have to make sure the cam retainer is compatible with the roller cam. It shouldn't cost that much. You can buy almost new or new unused cams here in the SN classifieds for anywhere from $50-125. Roller lifter cost also depends on what you want it to do. Keep the revs under 6500 and you can use the O.E. roller lifters. Want it to rev higher, you'll need Crane's O.E. style hyd lifters P/N # 36530, I've used these and they're good to 7500 rpms. Pushrods? Ford's hardened stock roller length cost about $30. Roller rockers run anywhere from $250-400 depending on what you want and the studs in your heads. Those GT40 heads ought to have roller springs to start with that are good to go with an B, E, F or X303 cam.

Dont forget the spider in the lifter valley to hold the roller lifters. There are also H bars for each set of lifters that you will need. I would get all the necessary items from a salvage yard or something... much cheaper.

What cam are you planning on running? That will make a difference on the springs. You wouldnt really have to have the roller rockers unless you wanted them. The stock 5.0's didnt have them.

Oh man, $1000? Then you're going to like my list.

1.)Junkyard valvetrain parts out of a roller 5.0(lifter valley spider, dogbones, and two 1/4-20 bolts, : $30 or maybeless. Also get the little sheet metal channels that go under the lifter pedestals.

2.) New FMS roller lifters: ~$120

3.) New FMS or TFS roler cam: $150 or less

4.) Roller-length pushrods: $30(or less). They don't need to be hardened if you have pedestal rockers.

5.) Crane Energizer roller rockers: $200

6.) Not "necessary" to change timing set, but a good idea. Double roller timing set: $40

7.) Don't forget a "cam change" gasket set: $30. The ones I've seen don't have a pan gasket, but I would rather pull the pan once than get the new cam in and have to start over. Add $20(or less) for a cork gasket.

8.) A new cam retainer plate if you need it: ~$30 from Ford.

That amounts to a worst-case scenario of $630 with all new parts, not 1000. You could save money with used parts, obviously.
