I took my car into a local shop, because i don't have the tools or time to replace the transmission. They suggested that i replace U-joints, which sounded like a good idea, because they probally haven't been changed in 22 years. I was replacing the tranny because of it locking me into 4th gear randomly, so i picked up a tranny from a guy in my mustang club and took everything to the shop, (also bought a steeda tri-ax).
When i picked it up this morning (about an hour ago) they told me that the gear were loud, which i wasn't too worried about because the shifter lacks the bushings to keep the noise down. The noise is extremely loud. But i decided to take it for a test drive to make sure everything else was cool. i hit about 40 MPH and the car starts shaking really bad, i hit 50 and the vibration makes me feel like the tires are coming off the ground. I went back and they said that the tranny probally has a bad input bearing. That didn't make much sense to me so I took it for another test drive and found that the vibrations are TOTALLY speed related, and not RPM. This is where i need help, if it is speed related that makes me believe that the new U-joints (they are new, i looked) made the drive shaft out of balance, since it isn't RPM related I don't think the vibrations are from the tranny. (the noise probally is and i'll deal with that later, i just want the car to be drivable at the moment) The vibrationis don't depend on what gear i'm in, even in neutral with the clutch in at 40 MPH the car vibrates (more like violent shaking). Please tell me if i'm thinking correct before I start threating to take heads.
Thanks
-aj

if its speed related, and not RPM, it would have to be related to the joints/rotating assembly or their install.

maybe try putting the old tranny back in and seeing if it makes the vibrations with the new u-joints.
