In Doug's defense, knowing a proper name makes it easier to search. Doug is a totally cool dude. And we know they do things a little differently up North.

If you have a mechanic's tach, you can hook it up at the cluster and see if it works. If so, the OEM tach is likely bad. If the mech's tach doesnt work, that really suggests a wiring issue.
