After fighting a overheating issue, I swiched from electric fan to (thermal) clutch fan w. shroud. To ensure proper cooling, I got a plastic 4" deep fan shroud.

This setup cools well, but my temp gauge show only 1/4 (rises ti 1/2 at long idle). It seems that it cools too much.

I have changed clutch once, since I suspected that it didn't disengage properly (you can still hear the fan even when the engine is cold).

Is it the fan shroud that is the fault here, closing the system too much?

What type and temp is the thermostat? That happened to me when when I ran a high flow thermostat. I put a standard flow back in and it warms up fine now. The fan is used to cool the motor, the thermostat is used to bring it to operating temp.

If you have a standard flow t-stat, it's probably stuck open.

Maybe the T stat is stuck open.

I used to now a Ford engineer, who has passed away. One of the things he told me was these cars were designed to run 190° thermostats, so your 195°-200° is dead-bang perfect. Ford considered overheat to be 220°

Sounds like a problem with the thermostat.
