During the process of my shifter install, I noticed quite a bit of surface rust on the undercarriage. Although its a low mile car, it was up north. Years ago we used a product called Ospho which worked well, but since then I have read some negative articles about acid restorers.
Here is what I used to do
Wire brush/sand remove as much surface rust
Spray on Ospho
Let dry for a few days to a week to let the acid nuetralize
If necessary, quick scuff with a pad or 180 grit
Etching primer
Paint ( I've used Duplicolor and even rustoleom black)
I know people have used Por15, but from what I read it is not easy to use and is expensive. Since it is the underside of the car there are going to be places that are not accessible to sand or get to , and frankly, I'm not worried about a show quality result. My goal is to simply try to take care of the surface rust, prime and then paint the bottom side of the car .
What have you guys used and recommend?
