S197 trunk, metal or composite?

Metal and yes the holes will need to be fixed.

go with some plastic plugs painted body color if you want a cheap fix.

I believe it is aluminum. Same as the hood.

Good way to tell if it is aluminum or steel is trying to stick a magnet to it. If it sticks, it's steel.

I'm pretty sure it's steel.

well, they sell those magnetic blackout panels, so that would indicate that it is steel.

I thought I had read from Ford the hood and trunk were aluminum

Maybe aluminum skin and steel bracing?
