The Dixie Region of the Sports Car Club of America Announces the
21st Annual Allies vs. Axis Solo Autocross
Sunday, December 7, 2008

Valdosta, GA -- For the past twenty one years on the first Sunday of December the Dixie Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) hosts a Solo Autocross to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day. The regional car club based in Tallahassee, FL pays homage to Pearl Harbor Day by challenging owners of American and British cars to compete against German and Japanese vehicle owners, while any Italian and French cars spend half the event with the Allies and the latter half on the Axis side. Many of the entrants add WWII decorations to their cars including "P-51" Mustangs and "Zero" Nissans. This event provides a light-hearted way for automotive enthusiasts to combine remembrance of this historic event with their passion for the automobile.

The Dixie Region club of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) hosts Solo autocross events at the South Georgia Motorsports Park large parking lot located at 2521 Hwy 41 North in Adel, GA, just a few exits north of Valdosta on Interstate 75. The next event, the 21st Annual Allies vs. Axis Solo Autocross, is scheduled on Sunday, December 7, 2008, Pearl Harbor Day. Registration and tech is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Free entry at the gate, $35 for each driver entry. Valid driver license required. Drivers meeting and official timed runs begin around 10 a.m. One run will be made at 7:53 a.m., the “first assault wave”, by a Japanese car entry. The event will run until the last car finishes, typically mid to late afternoon.

Solo is the SCCA brand name for autocross competition. Solo events are driving skill contests that emphasize the driver's ability and the car's handling characteristics. This is accomplished by driving a course that is designated by traffic cones on a low hazard location, such as a parking lot. While speeds are no greater than those normally encountered in legal highway driving, the combination of concentration and car feedback creates an adrenaline pumping experience. It is like being in a movie chase scene, only you are holding onto the steering wheel instead of a box of popcorn! Just one car at a time on the course running against the clock. A low time requires a driver be smooth, precise, and quick. The skills learned in the parking lot at a Solo Autocross will greatly improve your car control and help make you a safer driver on the street.

If you’ve always been interested in competing, but can’t afford to buy a dedicated racecar, Solo Autocross may be the sport for you. Cars are classed with other cars of similar performance, and classes are divided into different preparation levels (from stock to highly modified). You really can “run what you brung”! First timers are welcome to participate in the Novice Class with personal instruction if needed. For more information or to pre-register visit the local Dixie Region SCCA club at Dixie Region SCCA and the national SCCA website at SCCA Sports Car Club of America .
