hi i have been a car and truck enthusiast my entire life but mainly have been a GM guy. i know i am gonna get bashed over that but i think i have finally seen the light. my truck is gonna be paid off soon and now its time for a toy. i have been lookin a bit and i am really interested in gettin a mid to late 90's or a early 2000+'s mustang saleen. i love the way they look and the performance.

any pros or cons as far as 90's to 2000+'s.
are they very mod friendly and what is some good easy and cheap quick mods to do performance wise.
also how rare are the 351's i have seen them and they really put out some power but i can never find any for sale.

i wanna spend around 20k and i think i can find something good for that.

sorry so long but i had to get my points across. thanks for any help.

also i have seen 2 different style hoods on the 2000+ body styles. 1 similar to the gt and the other has 2 heat extractors why is that?

and 2 different exhaust set ups. standard dual and dual center exit. why is that as well?

The composite hood was a @$1,700 option vs the OE hood.

The center exhaust came on certain models, very few cars factory, but could be added after the fact.

nickpic,

While you're doing your research, there's a huge library of spec brochures, advertisements and dealer literature (some with pricing of options) available at Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club - SOEC - Literature

Mustang production figures are here: Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club - SOEC - Mustang Production

In addition to checking out the inventory at Performance Autosport, look at the links to the Auto Trader section and Saleen Locating Service at the bottom of this page: The Saleen Forums at soec.org -- but there are nice Saleens all over the Internet.

Depending on the year, you could look towards an S351, S281 Cobra, S281 Extreme or just a really nice S281 Supercharged.

Before you buy, call 800-888-8945 option 2 with the Ford VIN to verify authenticity.

Some answers for you:

If your budget is $20k you won't be able to find a 351 for that...guaranteed.

The 99-04 mustangs are moderately easy to mod, but a little on the pricey side. If you compare them to a terminator cobra (03-04) for instance, the saleens are a lot more expensive to modify and you don't get nearly as big of a bang for the buck.

For a 99-04 you'll be limited by the engine internals to around 400 rear wheel horsepower (roughly 480 hp to the crank). That's still pretty fast (i'm bumping up on that number right now).

I haven't seen many numbers from modified saleens from the 90's....so I can't speak to that one.

As far as the heat extractor hood, it became standard on the 2002+ cars. The center exit exhaust are more common on the 03-04.

If you can find one I recommend getting an 03 or 04 supercharged one. You get the upgraded saleen seats standard and the better supercharger (between 02 and 03 saleen switched from an eaton M90 to a Lysholm supercharger which gives off less heat). Again, though....$20k might be a stretch for a nice supercharged 03 or 04...but you never know!

There is one on the saleen locating service for $20k. Check out Saleen Locating Service

Search craigslist in your area as well as autotrader. Also...make sure to call and verify it's legit (like jim said)

A S351 was just sold for $10k.

It was a '94-'95 NON-supercharged (not a R-Code car) Coupe with 70k miles. We just discussed the car over on the forums at the Saleen Club of America.

I would think for double that he could find another one.

terminator is a slang term for the 03/04 cobra, because it supposedly "terminates" any competition that there was before the car came out. a terminator just refers to the 03/04 supercharged cobra
