hey 85 coupe 5.0-where exactly do you put the washers? And why? thanx!

Where? The same place as it shows in the pic above

Why? So the lugnut isn't grinding away at the axle flange...the washers take the majority of the wear and tear.

Stinger is correct, so that the washers take the force of pulling in the stud, not the lug nut.

1. hammer out the old stud, i used 3 swings from an 8 LB. hammer, don't be afraid of it, hit the damn thing, it's o.k. if you screw up the old stud.

2. start the new stud from the backside of the axle flange, instll three (3) washers from the front side and the lug nut on BACKWARDS.

3. grab a lug wrench and tighten it down untill it bottoms out on the backside.

4. replace wheel and torque to proper specs, re-check torque a day or so later.

5. crack a beer open and relax, you're done.

many thanks, i just got done and am about to drop it off the jack and take it for a test drive.

it was a *bitch* finding lugs to fit though. finally replaced my long ones with shorter ones, but they seem to fit O.K.

just a note, it was alot easier tightening that sucker down with the grease as stated. i also used a socket rather then my lug wrench, because eventually the stud got too long to fit the wrench on properly. (probably would have done better having another one or two washers)

but everything worked great, thanks to everyone except pep boys
