Lately i've been seriously thinking about selling my 97gt to purchase a 96 to 98 cobra. My only concerns are getting another car I don't know anything about because I know every inch of my car. And obviously i would be more expensive to maintain a 4v. I want to start modding mine but i'm torn. Would like to hear you guys thoughts thanks.

Keep your car. Do a PI swap with trickflow heads/cams to match your goals/valvesprings. Intake manifold, longtubes, TB/Plenum, and you've already well exceeded the power of a 96-98 cobra.

Unless ofcourse you can find a super clean cobra that meets your wants. If trading up sets you back 3-5k or so, you could have done the PI swap with the trickflows and been better off plus kept your car. Something you have to think about. Figure out your goals and what you want out of the car and whether or not the GT can meet them for you before you do anything.

Just do what you feel the strongest urge to do. I could have kept my '93GT and kept modding the snot out of it, but when I first heard the Mach 1 was being made again (back in 2001) I dropped my GT like a hot potato and sold it. I've never regretted it for 1 second. To me, it was worth it. Modding wise, I don't know about the '96-'98 Cobra, but for the Mach we share some mod parts with the GT so the prices are'nt more expensive or anything. When you get into the cams, heads, and Intake manifolds then you'll run into more expense. Other than that the N/A 4V is'nt anymore expensive.

If you're wanting to trade it simply for a power perspective, stick with your GT and start bolting on the parts.

If you are wanting to traded if for the power, sound, brakes, looks and all around coolness of owning a Cobra over a GT, go ahead and do so.

If you're bored with your '97 GT now, you'll probably still be bored with a stock '96-'98 Cobra....even a New Edge is going to feel pretty much the same. If that's the case and boredome of the SN95 itself is the issue....ditch the platform altogether and pick yourself up a Fox body, or an S197 for something with a different feel altogether.

I definetely want to stick with a 4.6 instead of a fox body. But I know if I seriously start modding it I will definetely end up keeping it. I think I may want one just because of the coolness factor and i've noticed recently that they're pretty reasonably priced. Plus hearing that 4v gurgle is something i'm craving too.

Seriously if I did it again I would not have went the N/A route
with my mustang.Instead I would have just installed a nice
centrifugal compressor like a Vortech supercharger and been
done with it.Obviously maintaining a 4V is alittle more expensive than
maintaining a 2V.Insurance is more expensive for a Cobra too.
I like the 94-98 SN95 body style the most though.
Ask yourself how many really fast 2V's do you see on the roads?

About as many fast 4V's as I've see.

Save for an '03-'04 Cobra, the quickest N/A 4V factory offerings made only went mid-13's in stock trim. Hell, stock for stock an early Cobra and a PI headed GT is pretty much a drivers race. ET's like that aren't hard to duplicate with a 2V GT.

+1..

My one question for you guys is, why the heck is a 4v more expensive to own over a 2v? Car insurance aside. I'm getting the impression from some posts that they are expensive to maintain. Modding wise, and insurance wise i can see, but not maintenance?

Dunno. I've never gotten that impression. My Dad's Mark VIII was literally fill it up and drive. The electronic gadgets on the car were more of a PITA than the powertrain.

Plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc are all the same. I don't believe maintenance in general is any more expensive?
I would sell your stang and start saving up for a 2011 5.0 4V.

Now that's and idea. It could take a while though, but I don't see him being disappointed in the end. :)

It would be nice to have a 2011 but I really don't want a car note that expensive. But I may just start modding mine and eventually sell it to get a mach or either 03/04 cobra.

are you in early county or douglas county? we have about the same cars (looks wise) but im currently setting up my ported pi head swap, and should be done by next week. you should take a ride when im done, should be solid 12's, ive thought about 4v's but the sound of lt and stingers with an x pipe, wants to make me puke. (heard it all summer annoying after the 2nd car)

a ported pi swap car will almost everytime will beat a 96-98 cobra and the insurance is half.. plus you will usually make more tq..

Maintaining a 4V doesnt cost anymore than a 2V. Modding a 4v doesnt cost anymore either unless you are getting into heads & cams. The only thing that will cost a bit more for a 4V would be insurance costs...

I wouldn't dump thousands in to any NPI car anymore, unless it is on a trailor. Cars are bad investments, investing 100% of what you car is worth with a Trick Flow head/cam setup or SC is far from smart.

Get a new car, either a cheap fox body for a weekend car, or a nice s197
