Serpentine belt rubs itself. (Hahaha)

Ok. I installed a FRPP A/C delete kit, and removed my smog pump ( just a shortbelt now) and put on some UD pullies. Theres a crappy pic i just did so u can maybe get a better idea. When the tensioner is all the way up, the belts sit about 2" apart ( red arrow) when it comes down, they go to about 1". Problem is that after 1/2 hour of driving, the belt stretches and they start rubbing. How can i fix this? I am getting a 3G Alt. soon, and i know that bracket modifications are necessary. will this possibly help with clearance?

You can get a goofy-sized belt and rock one of the accessories to route it (I have to do this w/my ac-deleted ps-raised blower setup). What you'll probably have to do as well is make another anchor hole for the belt tensioner if possible. I don't think it's possible w/the stock bracket but I had to do that w/the bracket I have for the blower setup. Huge pain in the ass, took me about a week and almost a dozen belts to figure a way to do it. It rubbed right at the water pump for me.

if i could somehow get a shorter belt on, i think i'd be fine. smallest i can fit with my alt. UD pully (larger, which gives a little more clearance) is 70.5" and 69.5" with the stock pulley. are there any belts that have NO stretch? the ones i'm using are supposed to be really good, with little stretch... but they seem to stretch about an inch, which is just enough to cause issues.... I've even tried 'pre-stetching- by hanging 50lb weights off them in my closet overnight!

i drilled another anchor hole for the tensioner on mine , havent had a problem with it yet. i have the frpp a/c delete kit w/ underdrive pulleys

79.50 that'd be great! not sure how it's wrong, but i'd like to know if it is! I don't think i can move my tensioner and still have it work properly. if anything, i think i need to move my alternator up a but to get more deflection in the belt.... its almost running straight across right now...

Ah, check the above post

Other than that, you'd change the height of the tensioner by making its anchor hole lower. With that, the idler pulley will sit higher (at a different arc) and put the tension on the belt about an inch to the right as you look at it.

Reroute the belt and see if that fixes it

thanks 795.0! That should do the trick! i feel stupid now! haha. i just went by a diagram i had seen on here before! just checked and it should fix my problem! belts a little short to do that though. will a 3G alt alter the belt length at all? waiting for mine in the mail, so i'd like to save buying yet ANOTHER belt.... anyone know? i think i'll probably need an extra 1" to 1.5" longer than what i have now. ( my gf tells me the same thing all the time!!)

I tried to route mine like this pic says to and i ended up poping the belt and bending my water pump shaft ..(water pump pullie came loose as well)...Drove great for a week and then she poped ...two months down the road and then a messed up noise was coming from the water pump...

I run mine like 79 posted with no issues at all. Same set up, Ford racing delete, no smog, with underdrive on the crank and WP.

Dude....you need to run it across the water pump the other way, like shown above!

I have it routed that way with a 3g alt and its been that way for 3 or 4 years, I also have A/C but that shouldn't matter.

thats how i routed mine. 71" belt, a/c delete and smog delete, PS moved up with new bracket

If there was enough room between the belt where the tensioner is, then it would work fine that way because everything would still turn in the correct direction.

i had to get a 1" longer belt when i did my 3g swap, but i used the stock pulley from the 3g and not the fox pulley (the 3g pulley is bigger) the actual mounting location the alt stays the same, the only bracket modifications are for clearence.

Just a different way of doing it. Requires you to get a March Alternator bracket kit though (Like 55$ through Jegs)
