ok i'm no newbie to setting timing on older stuff but i'm new to these newer fords...

I know there's that little SPOUT jumper that you pull to disable computer control on the timing... but is there actual mechanical advance? What is the factory setting for timing? 34 total?

I just got this car I bought running and it pings like crazy under WOT... so it's time for a timing check.

Theres absolutely no mechanical advance on the cars. Timing is adjusted completely by the computer. The only thing you can do is adjust base timing which then shifts up all the timing values in the computers timing table. i.e. if you run 2 deg. advance (12 deg. base timing) you timing will be 2 deg. higher at every rpm.
If the timing is at stock base (10 deg.) and its still pinging...you may want to try some seafoam. You may have some carbon deposits in the combustion chambers.

The pinging can also be from a bad batch of gas.

As the guys said, there is no 'total timing' per se. With this load-based processor, timing is all over the place depending upon how far your foot is into the pedal and myriad other conditions.

If timing is ok, check fuel pressure under WOT when it pings.

Good luck.

so does anyone know the max WOT advance of the stock computer? Initial + ???

I did time it and I did notice there was no mechanical, I had read on other threads the SPOUT out timing is 10* stock... this one was at 25 . Set it to 12, it's happier now

25?

Man - no wonder you were having problems. I get pinging at 16 if I don't use 94 octane. I'm at 14 and can run 89 octane with no issues.

I personally have seen timing advance (tiny tiny load) jump to over 40* with a base (SPOUT out) of 8*.

With 25* SPOUT out, I'm wonderin if your balancer is on the outs. You should have had huge issues with that much timing IMHO.

Or someone was running 25* locked timing and then the connector was later reinserted but the timing wasn't back down to near 10* (Spout out).

Good luck.

ya when you got into it it was like ping crazy, I've seen some crazy high timing run before so I think the balancer is fine. It runs like it should now in any case.

Well does anyone have any dyno data with WOT timing advance? Part throttle advance is typically much higher than WOT.
