WTF............... So I have been seeing things like this around town.

How can we have a coin shortage?
Did the tooth fairy suddenly become real?
Did Dr Evil come in a melt all of our change?

I have a customer here that works at the local bank.

The running policy was to never take in coins unless they were rolled and then get a bunch of information in case it was short.

Now they are being instructed to take in all coin and hand out very little if any.

She believes that someone is orchestrating the beginning of the one monitory system (enter conspiracy theories here).

for the influx of new coins, I would tend to agree. The amount of coin that is already in circulation has not decreased as an amount. The amount changing hands may have slowed but the term "Severe Shortage" is probably the wrong way to say it. I have not experienced a shortage of coin at my shop and I have a fkton of coin in my safe at home because I have just been lazy over the years to even take it to the bank. Had nothing to do with Covid, just not wanting to deal with them taking a cut for them to count it.

A lot of financial institutions are only offering limited services right now, meaning even businesses are having a hard time getting change orders filled from their local banks or bank branches.

Panic breeds panic. Idiots.
Absolutely. Advertising the coin shortage will lead to the same kind of idiotic hoarding we had for toilet paper.

On top of that, I've seen several places offering to buy up coins you have, which means if enough people take them up on that we could end up in a paper money shortage.

One of the dirty truths nobody in this country talks about is just how much gets done thanks to the underground economy that depends entirely on cash to work. If you want to see a bigger economic collapse, let the paper money supply dry up.

Seems pretty common sense really. at least from my perspective.

I'm an avid coin collector, so I like to deal in cash so I can inspect my change for cool older coins (which I do get from time to time). But in March, I went strictly cashless. I usually go to my local bank which has a machine, but that was closed (and only recently reopened) so that wasn't an option.

I have a 5 gallon water jug filled with coins, but going to the bank right now to cash them in doesn't seem a priority when I've been ordering most everything online now (I got used to this over our long shutdown) or use my "tap-to-pay" credit card to pay for this. Any cash transactions I make, I toss the coins in my water jug and they just sit.

If someone wants to pay me face plus 5%, i'll go turn in my coins. But they can sit where they are for now.

I have an ugly face, but I can send you many pictures of it if you like. I hear that the camera adds 10%/# so that should more than cover the conversion. Would that work for the coins?

Too many dollar coins make my pants saggy. Then I either need suspenders or become a professional electrician or plumber.
If the inside of the bank is open only by appointment, I bet there are plenty of those change jars and buckets waiting for a more convenient time.

Five dollar bills, pennies, dimes, Sacagawea dollars... You have options.

For the buttons and the shuttle, Monk demonstrates proper technique with wet wipes and attitude about germs. For the actual pneumatic tube, I think there is a Muppet with a feathered boa that takes care of that. Send Kermit back and forth a few times and the tube is squeaky clean.
