What do you know about flux core? I am a certified welder working for US Barge. If you are good and can get the proper certs you will make 20 an hour easily with union wages and benefits. It's the Portland Shipyard.

Crud, I forgot to mention. You are very likely to not do any sheet metal work at this shop! My business is HEAVY METAL!!!

It sounds sad, but with 5 years working in a fab shop (precision sheet metal), I have NO welding experience...gotta get the shop I'm working at to train me so I can get a better job

Funny how I was going to say the same thing of my shipyard. Not quite swing, but a sawyer or TWO will be needed. Damn, no welding experience huh? 10000+ hours and counting here. And I still pay orbital union dues!

It's hard to say as I don't make those calls, I'd say from 14-16 per hour. You could try to lean your way into welding from there, at least the grunt work to the actual certifications, which takes a loooooooong time. It's a better opportunity for training on the job than I ever had (I went to college). But there are many different factors involved in the starting pay. I started two months ago, certs in 2G 3G and SubArc 1G. There are two trainees who started higher than me, by two dollars, there are guys without the subarc cert who started like 8 dollars higher than me too! Ok, so I am now a little disgruntled and am taking my case straight to the company pres. It seems they start old timers high and screw us younger guys. Sucks. Oh well, I'll be old one day

There is a precision sheet metal fab shop in wilsonville called Integrated Metal Components. They got Amada Brakes, a turret or two, and a laser. The better shop is Crystal Light in Tualatin. They got all amada stuff and they pay better. It's a big shop with lots of turrets, lasers and brakes, and an onsite plating facility. I almost went to work there, but I decided to become an electrician instead. What do you specialize in? I got about 5 years precision Fab too. I was a brake operator, then QA, then dept mgr. I love the stuff.

I specialize in turret/laser, only worked with Amada. I can make an Apelio do anything. I was a turret department lead for a few years at another shop that had 8 turrets and the same number of employees working for me. I am working for WW metal fab in Milwaukie right now, but was hoping to find something closer to Hillsboro.

Crystal light has a 3rd generation Apelio with a sheet feeder. Really nice setup. Go talk to them they are really nice people.

What shop did you learn at? Guessing by the Oregon O, maybe Superior Steel in Eugene? That was where I got my start.
