pop off the bezel that goes around it (plastic, and clips becareful) using a clip puller or a screwdriver and pop it off, take off your shift knob, and the boot and plastic i believe slide off together, or you'll see where the boot is bolted.

how will this tell him if he has an aftermarket shifter?
a set of ratcheting box end wrenches really helped with the front two bolts (notch - i think you are right. my recollection was that they were either 8 or 10 mm, and 10 sounds more likely). some folks have clearanced the stock center console itself to get access to those bolts and some remove the center console. i was able to slowly get them out with a ratcheting box end. good luck.
