Shift Knob

No big problem i was just wondering if some people could give me a little advice about selecting a new shift knob. I have a steeda tri-ax shifter and i really like the knob it's just that i broke a few over summer and i've been fixing it ever since. i really like the groove of the handle but really think i need to stop stuffing it with jb weld.
1. who makes a good shift knob?
2. What's a a good price for a shift knob?
3. What kind should I really stay away from?

1. I really like the shift knobs that came on the newer cobras. Real nice feeling leather shift knobs with a silver *medalian* with the shifter movement printed on it. The newer cobras are 6-speeds though, however, ford racing makes a replica design with the 5-speed pattern.

2. A good price is debateable. Most shift knobs cost WAY to much in my opinon. That is the reason I haven't purchased my beloved cobra leather shifter (I contemplated stealing it off my friends cobra though ). Try to stay under $40 bucks, the cobra will usually run a little higher though so if you want that be prepared to pay.

3. Stay away from completely metal shift knobs as they usually get very very hot in the summer and burn your hand when you start driving. Also, I do not like shift knobs that they call "Power Knobs" they are completely ball shaped granite knobs and weigh in at over a pound. Real heavy and put un-neccesary stress on ur shifter.

you could try and find a question that will have more opinions than this, but it would be hard.

I think the question is just fine actually. Those are the three things I'm not sure about. I'm trying to buy a shift knob and really don't know what makes a good shift knob. i've already two posts within 30 minutes of putting this up. so if anyone would like to throw their two cents in about what to choose and what not to choose in a shift knob. i'm all ears.

easy. i was saying that you can ask 20 people and get 20 answers. some of us dont know what knob you have, so we dont know what you like (round, gripper, Tee handle....). i personally think a knob should match the interior and often the decision is somewhat predicated around that.

i will try to be constructive - if you live somewhere hot, i would get leather (metal gets real hot in the desert here). do you have a pic of the knob you have now (that you say you like)?

i meant no offense in my original post - I just think you will have to hunt around on your own or find a few you like and then ask people pros and cons of those specific knobs.

I like the stock one myself, but i also like the hurst t-handle, i had that for a while, its all just wat you want man

:OT: I'm sorry HISSIN50, reading your second message I did take what you said out of context. I guess when I read it I just took it the wrond way. I just acted that way because some people think they own this forum and whe they think a post isn't worth the space so they will just leave a comment that completely undermind the person who left it. So when i saw that someone with over 9,000 post left me a short message, not really saying what i wanted it to say i took it the wrong way. I've seen your posts on other topic and it always seems to be good advice. i think you've even helped me in the past.

So yeah my car is black and grey inside. black paint with some silver cobra rims. there's a pick in my garage. they seats are re-upolstered with a black leather outside with a grey/black cross stitch cloth in the middle. I can post pictures when i get back from class today.

I turned my own on a CNC lathe out of aluminum. I know that aluminum can turn your hands black, but it has never been a problem with this knob. I had polished an earlier (smaller diameter) verson of this knob that I engraved a trashy woman reclining with the name "Jezebel" aiming towards the rear (my car's name).

I don't have too much of a problem with the knob getting hot in the summer, but there are a few occasions. . .

Oh well, I needed to work on shifting faster anyway.

I like the 1995 Cobra knob myself with that color interior. Here is a picture of mine.

This is the knob I was talking about earlier. PERFECT, imo for a two tone grey and black interior like myself.

The 99+ Gt's come with a really nice leather knob. You could score one cheap since most guys (like myself) upgrade.

I put a Mach 1 shift knob in my car. It's billet aluminum with the 5-spd pattern but doesn't get hot. I like it a lot.

The stock leather knob has moved to my 5.0's t-5...which isn't even in the car yet

Yogi, we are cool.
I was trying to be cute the first time around - and i try not to put down peoples' threads (though stuff comes out weird sometimes, especially when I am tired). but that certainly was not my intention.
There is quite a gammet of shifters out there and I know that I dont like a lot of them, so i would have had to limit peoples' choices a little (though stuff on here looks good - you guys have good taste). I have seen some threads like this and i was choking back vomit as i looked at pics.

i should add with the temps (i dont know if that is an issue for you): cars that sit outside here (desert) get to around 180* inside (getting in literally takes your breath away). over about 130*F, i have to put something on the shifter before i can touch it. it is annoying (leather would have been a much better choice). that is important to me, which was why i mentioned that. it is not an issue for most though.

I have a pool cue that is basically the same thing as a "Fat Knob" ( i think thats what there called)...anyway i love it. Doesnt get hot in the summer like the metal ones, costs about 5 bucks to make your own.

I got the 35th Anniversary Aluminum Knob... I've never really had any problems with it being hot or whatever, and it looks real nice, IMO. Kinda pricey tho, around $30-40

I also have a Steeda Tri-Ax, and I love it! good choice...

Exactly...that is the knob I have on my car and I love it...it looks 100% at home in the car. Even more at home than the stock plastic looking one. It is bigger for a bigger handed guy like me and makes you feel a control to shifting if that makes sense.

I have drove a 04 Mach 1 and the knob wouldn't be straight and tight at the same time straight from the factory. I didn't like it because it had a smaller feeling to it and it has a "greasy" feeling to it from the hand's grease but if I was to get one like that...that would be the one.

It is leather for me on a shifter though (less heat transfer) and grippier IMO.

The 99+ Gt shifter handles go for $30-40 bucks off of www.50resto.com if your interested...

Hissin you're pretty much right about the shift knob getting incrediably hot in the summer. my last shift knob mostly leather except for the thumb groove which was metal. in an all balck car with black interior that **** was hot. i just really liked the feel my last knob. i don't know what i was thinking when i was looking for a shift knob online the other day because i didn't even think of looking at summit.com or resto.com. thanks for the ideas.
