I didn't really have a problem installing my shifter...but if you are I would use a swivel of some sort or just remove the console...

What kind of shifter you installing?

I cut my console a little bit to get them out. Didn't hurt, and you can't even tell once you put the shifter trim back on.

I did the same with one of those ratchet wrenches. It takes a few minutes, just take your time. The threads arn't too long.

Just two words - Dremel Tool!! Take a cutting wheel and trim back the plastic that stops you getting a socket on it - like lxsteed says - you can't see it with the shifter cover back on. Way to frustrating trying to use a wrench and do a 1/4 turn at a time.

Same here... I've used a mini-ratchet before and I've also used a wrench. The mini- ratchet will squeeze under there, but still won't be able to turn but so much. The wrench is probably the easiest, but it will take some time turning it a tiny bit at a time. I never tried cutting the plastic away though.

i dont know if it is what you folks meant, but i used a ratcheting box end wrench. piece of cake. good luck. hope your front shifter housing bolts (13 mm or so bolts that hold the shifter housing to the trans) are easier to get out than mine. that did require console removal.
i recommend using anti seize on the big bolts so you can hopefully get them out with the console in.
good luck.
