Hey guys. I have a '65 with c4 and no neutral safety. 2 questions. 1-My shifter is a little sloppy and I thought of replacing bushings and adding a neutral safety switch. How hard is it to add the switch with tranny staying in car and together? 2-If I were to change shifters, say to a B&M or something with neutral built in, what would this involve? My current shifter uses a rod where the aftermarkets use a cable. Thanks, Duane

The Neutral Safety switch is on the Transmission at the gear selector shaft:

Here is a link to a Mustang Monthly Article on how to rebuild your shifter:

Thanks Tim65GT. How hard is it to install the switch with the tranny in the car? I know I'll have to take something loose at the tranny to install it and want to make sure I don't screw something up inside. What is involved? Also, if it is a real PIA, would I be better to go aftermarket with a neutral safety built in? AND, if so are there any pros/cons going to the cable vs. rod shifter mechanism.

One 1/2" nut to remove the shifter bracket from the shaft, and remove two small bolts on the switch. Then it slides off the shaft. Then install the new one and plug in the wiring and adjust the switch. See the other thread link.

No other transmission parts or items in the way.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the shifter bracket just slid off w/o something internal coming loose or not.
