SHM Mustang 4.6 3 Valve Engine Kits?

I don't know much about this stuff so I was wondering if someone could enlighten me. I found these big bore/stroker kits on http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/ (Just scroll down a little from the top) and I was wondering if someone could explain what kind of results as far as power gains and reliability someone should expect from a kit like this and is the price good (I have heard that SHM is overpriced). Lol, that is what I was worried about. My main question though is what kind of power and reliability would you get from these mods regardless of where they are from.

I apologize I didn't look through SHM's site to find the kits, but generally I would not suggest a bore/stroke kit unless the car's engine is already coming apart. The amount of cubes gain and the power increase is not worth the dollar amount. For the little extra if you are redoing a block, sure go for it, but to tear an engine down to do it would in my opinion be wasted money. The only other exception is if you were trying to get every little last power out of an engine you wanted to keep n/a. Put some FI on it and enjoy.

Thanks, this is all good info. I was looking into FI and really like the Procharger, but I think I am going to just build up my engine and keep it N/A. It looks like the kits will be a waste of money from what you said so I will just have to look for some cams and heads to get the n/a power I am looking for, thanks again.

Those kits are WAY overpriced. Stroking a motor CAN/WILL show gains. There's no replacement for displacemant. But more important than the gain from the stroker kit itself is the potential that it gives you. However, I think that the aftermarket is not advanced enough to be thinking about stroking your engine. What is an S197 281 cubes? The biggest stroker kit I saw was a 332, thats 51 cubes larger, a substancial amount. But is it worth $2800? I would say no unless your running a good bit of boost. I can get a 347 rotating assembley for $1100 for my 289 (+58 cubes). I would suggest waiting until the price comes down (and it WILL), but I would not rule it out as an option.

My worry with stroker kits is the amount of skirt left in the block at bdc on the 4.6L. There was a thread written by Al Papitto of Boss330 Racing something to that effect on another board.

I would not stroke a 4.6 Mod Motor, I would increase the displacement of an aluminum 4.6 Block to 5.0L via the Big-Bore. That is the only way I would ever increase the displacement of the 4.6 Mod motor. I wouldn't look at a forged kit unless you are looking at FI for your car.
